Human remains found in an abandoned property in Santa Monica were identified on Saturday, May 6 as 39-year-old Beau Mann, according to the Santa Monica Police.

Mann, who is from Oxford, Massachusetts, according to Telegram, founded Sober Grid, an app designed to support those recovering from addictions through an online community and peer coaching.

Mann created Sober Grid in 2015 after struggling with drugs and addiction himself, according to the app's Facebook page. The app has received funding from national health organizations and reports that it has saved thousands of lives.

The start-up founder went missing on November 30, 2021, after getting into an Uber outside of a 7/11 convenience store not far from Sober Grid’s Los Angeles office, according to Sober Grid

Mann texted 911 while in the Uber, a post on Sober Grid's Facebook reports. He was dropped off in Santa Monica and was never heard from again.

More than a year later, on Tuesday, April 25, the Santa Monica Police Department was informed that human remains were found in the courtyard of an abandoned property in the 2900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard.

His remains were found about a mile from where he was dropped off, Sober Grid said.

Mann's community worked "exhaustively" to find him, according to Sober Grid.

Multiple Facebook groups were created to help find Mann, and a GoFundMe raised $7,000 to aid search efforts.

"His bright smile and endless energy and compassion will be missed," the statement from Sober Grid reads. "While he is no longer with us, we know Beau’s spirit will live on in Sober Grid’s mission to help those in need."

Police request that anyone with information about Mann's death or circumstances around it contact SMPD Detective Ismael Tavera at (310) 458-2256, Ismael.tavera@santamonica.gov, or the Watch Commander (24 hours) at (310) 458-8427.
